How to Remove Stubborn Stains Using the Soak Method
Share
Sometimes a regular wash just isn't enough, especially with older, set-in or mystery stains.... The soaking method is one of the easiest and most effective ways to lift stubborn marks from clothing, linen, and op shop treasures.
Here's a simple guide anyone can follow, to extend the life of these amazing garments!
What You'll Need
- A bucket, basin or sink
- Warm water
- Your choice of stain remover
Step 1: Identify the Stain and Check the Label
Before soaking, quickly check the care label on your item
Delicates like wool, silk, or vintage fabrics may need cooler water or soaking times.
Step 2: Pre-Wet the stain
Run warm water over the stained area
This helps to loosen the fibres and allows the stain remover to work more effectively
If the stain is oily, add a tiny drop of dish soap and gently massage it in
Step 3: Mix Your Soaking Solution
Fill your bucket or sink with warm water
Add your stain remover following the instructions on the packaging
Give it a quick swirl so it fully dissolves
Step 4: Submerge the Item
Place your stained item fully into the water
Make sure the stained area is completely underwater
Let it soak for at least 1 hour
For tougher stains, whites, especially old tea towels, soak them overnight!!
Step 5: Check the Stain
After soaking, check the stain out, if its not to the desired level of lift, repeat the cycle again!!
Step 6: Rinse and Wash as Normal
Once the stain has faded or disappeared, rinse the item thoroughly in clean water.
Then pop it into the washing machine (or hand wash if delicate) using your usual detergent.
Let it air dry, heat from the dryer can set any remaining stain, so avoid it until you're sure the mark is gone
