At OpShopSocial, we’re proud to be part of the Presbyterian Support Otago family.
But what exactly is PSO, and how does our opshop help support their mission?
Here’s a closer look.
What is Presbyterian Support Otago?
Presbyterian Support Otago (PSO) is a local social services organisation dedicated to building a safe, strong, and caring community across the Otago region. Their vision is simple but powerful: every person is valued and grows in a safe and strong community.
PSO walks alongside people across all generations, from young children and families to older people, creating places to live, learn, and thrive. Their work is guided by values of integrity, respect, courage, manaaki, and aroha.
What Services Does Presbyterian Support Otago Provide?
PSO delivers a wide range of services across Otago, supporting people through many stages and challenges in life. Some of their key services include:
Enliven
Enliven provides support for older people through rest homes, retirement villages, in-home services, and day programmes. Their approach is holistic and respectful, focusing on security, meaningful relationships, and opportunities for activity and contribution.
Family Works
Family Works is PSO’s social services arm, supporting individuals, families, and children who may need help. Their services include:
- Social Work - assisting with housing, employment, benefits, parenting, legal processes, and more.
- Strengthening Families - a collaborative programme bringing together local services and agencies to support whānau/families.
- Financial Inclusion & Capability - helping people build financial confidence and access financial systems.
- Foodbank - providing emergency food parcels for individuals and families in crisis.
Why the Opshop (That’s Us!) Is Important
OpShopSocial plays a critical role in supporting PSO’s work. Here’s how:
Funding Social Services
The profits from our opshop go directly back into PSO’s social services. When you donate or shop with us, you’re helping fund Family Works, the Foodbank, social work support, and more.
Sustainable Giving
We provide a meaningful way for people to pass on pre-loved clothing, collectables, books, and household items, giving them a second life while supporting the community.
Community Building
Our opshop is more than a place to buy affordable treasures. It’s a space to connect, volunteer, and feel part of a caring and supportive community.
Our Mission, alongside Presbyterian Support Otago
Being part of Presbyterian Support Otago means more than running a shop, it means walking alongside people. PSO’s mission is to support people across the generations, and at OpShopSocial, we are proud to live that mission every day.
- We value integrity and respect, treating everyone who walks through our doors with dignity.
- We show manaaki and aroha, caring for our customers, donors, and volunteers just as PSO cares for its wider community.
- We call out injustice, and by supporting PSO, we help those who face hardship, inequality, or vulnerability.
